The Truth About Being an Authentic Tea Addict

It’s time to take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself “Am I a tea addict?” If you are, you’re in good company. If you don’t know, it’s quite alright — you’ll soon find out if you share the same quirks as the rest of us do.

Tea addict: are these words supposed to be a bad thing? What’s so terrible about being a tea addict anyway? Tea is social. Tea is fun. Tea can even be healthy! Today, we’re reflecting on 29 of our favorite tea-addict quirks and doubling down on our obsession with tea.

In our neck of the woods, we think tea addicts are not only glorious but some of the best kinds of people you can associate with. Welcome, fellow tea-lover.

  1. You Don’t Have Any More Room in Your Cupboard

Seriously, if you buy one more box or tin you’re going to have to consider a second form of storage — or maybe a third if it’s already too late. Cleaning out your stash is something you’ll get around to one of these days. Yes, it might be a problem, but not one you’re going to face today. In the meantime, let’s enjoy some tea.

  1. You Need Your Morning Cuppa…Need, Not Want

Your morning cup of tea is the fuel that fires you up and gets you started on the right foot. It might not even be about the caffeine. For you, it might be about the routine itself. If you don’t have it, you feel a little incomplete.

  1. You Always Find a Little Extra Change for Tea

You might scramble to pay your bills, but somehow you always find a way to accommodate some extra money for tea. Yes, you know you should probably live a little more within your means. But, as a tea addict, your daily happiness is also part of your mental well-being. You’ll make it work.

  1. You Steep in More Ways Than One

How will you steep today? Will you use a tea infuser? Will you use a tea press? You might even just drop a spoonful of tea leaves directly into the teapot. You do whatever works for you and intrigues you, today.

  1. You Have No Idea How Many Teacups You Have

How many teacups do you have, again? The correct answer is “too many”. It’s not completely your fault. If people didn’t constantly gift you teacups, you might have been able to keep track — maybe. But you know the funniest thing about it? You typically use your one favorite cup…every single day.

  1. You Have Tea Remedies for Every Kind of Scenario and Sickness

Coming down with a cold? You know the perfect ginger turmeric lemon tea. Need something calm and soothing? How about chamomile tea? Need a good caffeine boost to power through the afternoon workload? Some strong black tea will do just the trick!

  1. You Overwhelm Your Friends With All the Tea Options

Your friend comes over. You casually ask them if they would like tea…and they say yes! As a tea addict, you spare no moment asking them what kind of teas they like, if they want caffeine or not, and if they like this or that flavor. It’s always amazing that they don’t run for the door out of sheer overwhelm. This is true friendship.

  1. You Turn Your Nose Up at Microwaved Tea

Who does that, anyway? Microwaved tea? Heathens! Is microwaved tea even good enough to be called tea? Fun fact: we wrote an article about microwaved tea you might want to check out. It might not be as bad as it sounds — or is it?

  1. The Most Important Happenings Happen Over Tea

There are very few scenarios where tea won’t improve the setting or where tea is deemed inappropriate. From bridal showers to family gatherings and political negotiations, tea is the most happening part of any memorable and significant happening.

  1. Your Teaware is Also Your Decor

Your tea-stuffed cabinet has no room to spare for teaware. Such is the tea addict’s dilemma. So, where do you put it all? Around your house, of course! Your bookshelves, displays, and stands are graced with the presence of eclectic teawares.

  1. You BYOT (Bring Your Own Tea)

Is it rude to bring your own tea? Maybe. But, when it comes down to it, you’d rather drink water than their chalky gross teabag tea. And you need tea, so there really is no other option — right?

  1. You Secretly Judge “So-Called” Tea People

You’re more than skeptical — and maybe even downright cynical — when someone says they love tea. What is their definition of “love”? Until you can clarify that they do in fact enjoy an elevated tea experience — and they don’t drink only Lipton or bagged tea dust — you won’t crack a genuine smile of acceptance.

  1. Your Life’s Greatest Milestones are Paired With Tea

When you reflect on your most influential memories they are paired with teas from the moment. The smell of Irish Breakfast Tea when you went to Granny’s on Sunday. The sweet strawberry tea you had at the rose garden with your friend.

  1. You Can’t Have Just a Cuppa…How About a Pot?

The truth is, as a tea addict, you could drink tea from morning to night. You don’t understand what this “single cuppa” nonsense is all about. Who makes only a single cup of tea when you can enjoy a whole teapot?

  1. You Know What Rooibos and Bergamot Are

Yes, you know what these are — and you have very strong opinions about them. You know how to properly pronounce Rooibos. And you know which of your teas have Bergamot in them.

  1. People Gift You Tea Things — All the Time

If you aren’t gifted tea itself, you are likely to receive some kind of teaware or a tea cozy. A lot of the time it’s something you’ll never really use. But it’s the thought that matters. A lot of the time it ends up on your shelf as decor — as happy grateful memories.

  1. You Plan Outings Around Tea

Your idea of a perfect day involves a visit to an afternoon tea room. You might even plan a whole vacation around visiting cities with the best-known tea rooms — and you have zero shame about it. This is the way of the tea addict.

  1. You May Have Teabags in Your Cupboard — But It Doesn’t Mean You Like Them

You really don’t like it, but sometimes you break down and have — shudder — a teabag. It’s okay. You may have let convenience or laziness get in the way this time, but you forgive yourself and let it slide. No one needs to know. You might feel a little less guilty sampling some whole-leaf tea sachets though. You hear good things about them.

  1. You Try to Convince All Your Coffee-Drinking Peeps to Switch to Tea

It’s not like you impose your opinions on others randomly — never! But when someone says they should cut back on the coffee or find an alternative, you are quick to recommend seven different teas. You also bombard them with reasons why the L-theanine and caffeine boost is so much better than the crash they experience from coffee. It’s so difficult to convert people!

  1. You Get a Little Upset When You See People Abusing Matcha

It’s just not right! It infuriates you when you see matcha everything — like lattes, frappes, or whatever else. What happened to the honor and the beauty of the tea ceremony? It might irk you as a tea addict, but you stew there in silence because you don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble. At least they’re trying.

  1. You Organize Your Tea by Type or Caffeine Level

Your large collection of tea is organized in a way that makes sense to you. Maybe you have them sorted by type — black, white, or oolong. Maybe, you have them sorted by caffeine level  — herbal, caffeine-high, or caffeine-free. Or by morning, afternoon, and evening-appropriate teas.

  1. You Have a Few Secret Teas — And You’ll Never Waste Them on Unrefined Tastebuds

In your collection, you have some premium teas that are tucked away in an unassuming space. This tea is put aside for you. It’s high-quality or holds a special sentimental value. You only share it with other tea lovers who will genuinely appreciate it.

  1. You Have Dreams of Opening Your Own Tea House

You find yourself dreaming of opening your own tea house one day. You see yourself flitting about and serving your happy guests, who might all be fellow tea addicts. But, then again, if you really think about it, you would rather just sit and enjoy tea. It’s a lot tastier and a lot less work. — As you were!

  1. Anytime is a Great Time for Tea - Seriously!

Morning, noon, and night? These are great times to have tea. While you’re on a romantic date or having serious talks with people? These are also perfect scenarios for tea. Everything is made better with tea.

  1. You Have a Daily Tea Routine

Maybe you have tea in the morning. And you certainly have tea in the afternoon as a pick-me-up. You might even have tea at night as you curl up with the cat and a good book — it’s always nice to wind down for bed. Tea is a daily ritual. Tea is a habit you’ll never break.

  1. Your Truest Friends Go Out of Their Way to Offer You Tea

You arrive at your best friend’s place and they know you so well. “Would you like some tea?” they ask. You love them so much and appreciate that they know you so well. Of course, you’ll take some tea!

  1. All Weather is Tea-Appropriate

It doesn’t matter if it’s hot and humid: A tea addict needs their tea! Sometimes you opt for a refreshing iced tea. But you recall some theory about drinking hot beverages to cool you off while it’s hot outside. You don’t know if it’s true but you’ll use that as justification to sip on your hot tea. Cheers to your own happiness!

  1. People Ask You to Make the Tea

It’s no surprise to you if you are asked to make the tea when you’re at someone else’s home. And you gladly accept, knowing full well that you are probably the most qualified person to do the job anyways. You just cross your fingers for some worthwhile tea options for steeping.

  1. You Have Strong Opinions About How to Add Milk to Your Tea

Milk before tea or tea before milk? Yes, there is a right answer — and you know full well what it is. Any tea addict knows the history of teaware, its association with milk, how the practices have changed today, and why.
